okami and the phoenix by weshoyot okami and the phoenix by weshoyot
this is my second entry for the contest.

done in ink on bristol board with prisma markers and retouched in photoshop with a mouse. I was going to do this fully hand-drawn, but I'm trying to teach myself how to color in PS2 so it was an exercise...

hope you enjoy, and please check out my other entry. thanks!

note to judges: the 300 dpi version is available on request

WOW! I have been going through your portfolio and I am really impressed. I saw Lockett Down's
journal where she mentioned you drawing her book
and that brought me to your sight. Congrats to you.

this is BEAUTIFUL. i love your style and the pose of the wolf. not many people display it baring its teeth, so that adds tensity and more feel to the ferocity, yet pure beauty of this character. the pheonix is gorgeous, too. overwhelming, like a tidal wave, but gorgeous and inspiring. the colors are amazing as well as the details. everything seems to "melt" together...adds unity, though the colors suggest harmony and peace

That thing has CLAWS.
But they're shiny claws. I love them.

Moegami looks possessed... I like that. It's original. So are the feathers.

But I mostly love how you arranged the points of light. They're what make the piece pop.

Heya, i just now got around to looking at the contest winner/runner-ups, and some other artwork that they didn't show. Hence how i stumbled upon this piece, and let me tell you.... this piece is THE best piece of Okami art that i've seen here, and by all accounts it SHOULD have won the contest, i don't know why it didn't except that the judges must have had something wrong with all of them. I won't go further into my thoughts on this, but this is truly a really marvelous piece and thank you for making and sharing it.

hey, thanks so much for spending the time to show your support for my piece. i found it rather odd that one of the winners had also won another DA contest as well within the vicinity of a few weeks time...but it's all over and done with now. I had a great time drawing the entries i submitted and am so glad so many people have enjoyed them and spent some time commenting. :)

I love this one. It ought to win I think, your technique is wonderful as is the art and composition. Your interpertation of Amatareau is also fantastic, I really love it.

Your other one, the one on canvas (forgot its name in writing moment) is one of my favourites as well, but this is fantastic.

Absolutely gorgeous lineart, and wonderful color choice. It's really a wonderful piece.

However. I'm not convinced that the Photoshop touch-ups, as they are, help it more than they hinder it. The highlights added are pure white glares, which creates the optical illusion of a superwhite, making them appear much whiter and brighter than the white on Ami herself, or elsewhere in the picture. It effectively draws the eye away from the central figures, which is really detrimental to such a beautiful design. I'd love to see a version with the highlights removed, or at least toned down...

you make good points, however, my intent in this piece was to make ami the central image in this piece and the phoenix in the background more of a design element. I wanted to make the tips of the feathers like glows, and so that's why they are brighter than the wolf herself. I purposely made the background imagery flat with the color choice and lack of depth, to make the wold be the focal point. I suppose I was thinking if this were a comic book cover, the text would go above and I wanted the wolf as the central theme and make it look enchanted or magicl with the glows.

not an excuse either, but i have a really crappy monitor, and so the stuff i do in photoshop really looks different to me than it would on a good monitor. my BF is a graphic designer and he's always saying how the stuff looks much brighter on his screen and how i need a new monitor for my computer. that may be why they appear very glarey, as stuff on my monitor is rather dark, and so i may have made them brighter than they really need to be.

good points you make though, and i suppose it boils down to a personal preferance in regards to the colors....thanks so much for taking the time to share your opinion though. it helps a lot and means more than a simple 'good job' and whatnot. i really appreciate it.
